Air National Guard Breakfast

Wednesday, October 25, 2000  Port Hueneme, California:  The annual breakfast of the joint Oxnard and Port Hueneme Chambers of Commerce took place this morning at the Air National Guard facility in Port Hueneme. Approximately 40 guests of the Chamber were treated to a welcoming breakfast and briefing prior to loading onto two buses for the trip to the tarmac and the waiting C-130 aircraft.

The briefing included a detailed explanation of the 146th Airlift Wing of the California Air National Guard presently stationed at Port Hueneme. From tactical delivery of personnel, equipment and supplies to theater commanders worldwide, units of the wing also provide aero medical evacuation, command and control, and airlift load preparation in addition to all the services required to maintain and operate a fleet of C-130E Hercules transports. Of great interest to the visitors from the area was the Wing's ability to convert their planes to firefighting efforts when called upon.

The unit has over 1200 active personnel attached to it, with 300 working on a full time basis. In June 2000 the unit went to the Ukraine, the adopted sister country of the State of California to help them develop a similar program of preparedness. The unit will also travel to Chile in November for 3 weeks to provide similar training to the Chilean National Guard.

October 25th started out as a perfect day. With totally clear skies, the aircraft, under the able direction of the crew took off at approximately 9am. Upon liftoff, the crew opened the back doors to provide the visitors with an unbelievable view of the Channel Islands from the air. We were also invited to spend some time in the cockpit, which provided another great view of the Channel Islands. The flight lasted about 1 hour and the comments from everyone upon completing the trip was one of renewed appreciation for our Armed Forces. Below is a pictorial summary of the day.

I think many of you who belong to the Chamber and have not had the opportunity to make this flight should circle your calendars for next October and make sure you reserve your space for this great experience.
